Both our clients and employees share a common certainty about URS--on the job safety comes first. Health and safety are more than policies at URS; they are the foundation of how we work in the field, construction site, office and laboratory. Our Health, Safety and Environment Program reinforces a key element of our operation - that the protection of our employees, clients, sub-contractors and the environment is essential.
Throughout URS we believe that accidents are preventable, and our goal is zero workplace incidents. Our business practices, operations and projects all reflect our deep commitment to protecting people and the environment. At URS we never expedite a project at the cost of safety.
Training
All employees share an obligation to prevent accidents and are expected to conduct business in a way that actively integrates the elements of the URS Health, Safety and Environment Program into applicable aspects of our operations. As a result, training on safety issues is an ongoing process at URS.
Immersion in our safety culture begins on the first day of employment. From ergonomics to regulatory-compliant training on the handling of hazardous waste, URS offers more than 30 online courses and conducts more than 750 on-site training classes annually in offices worldwide.
Award-Winning Projects and Safety Milestones
BP’s 2004 Health and Safety Diamond Award
URS Europe was the proud recipient of the BP Diamond Award for Health, Safety Security and Environmental (HSSE) Excellence in 2004. The award recognizes URS’ HSSE performance in 2004 and our commitment to HSSE in the work we perform for BP on sites across the Europe, Africa and Middle East regions.
The Diamond Award is presented annually to contractors who have an outstanding HSSE record for work on BP remediation management (BP RM) sites and who have contributed to successful HSSE leadership, innovation and subcontractor management.
To receive the award, URS had to satisfy stringent entry criteria set out by BP RM. We achieved impressive HSSE statistics with no loss time incidents and an impeccable driving record. In addition, URS provided outstanding leadership, innovation and subcontractor management under BP RM's HSSE program.
OSHA Safety Milestone
The BP Wood River remediation site, located in Wood River, Illinois, recently celebrated a major milestone: working 10 years without an OSHA Recordable Injury. The URS Chicago Metro and St. Louis offices have been a part of the remediation team at the site for more than 20 years.
Flight Instruction Safety Milestone
At Fort Rucker, the largest rotary wing flight school in the world, EG&G instructors turn entry level soldiers with little or no flying experience into skilled pilots for the U.S. Army, Air Force, NATO and other allied countries. As testament to the high caliber of training the soldiers receive, the program boasts an unprecedented safety record. More than 1.6 million hours of flight instruction have been completed without a single pilot fatality or loss of aircraft.
One Million OSHA Incident-Free Hours
URS Austin recently celebrated the completion of more than one year and 1,000,000 OSHA incident-free hours. This location offers many business services, including environmental services, transportation, water resources and water/wastewater services, construction oversight and management, remediation engineering, process engineering, information technology, air quality measurement systems, and outsourced technical and management services.
Chemical Weapons Destruction Milestone
Since 1996 more than 900 EG&G Division employees working in tandem with U.S. government workers have been participating in the destruction of the military’s stockpile of chemical weapons at the U.S. Army’s Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF). The TOCDF team recently marked a major project milestone with the safe destruction of one million chemical munitions.
Located 22 miles south of Tooele, Utah, the TOCDF is housed at the Deseret Chemical Depot, which is the largest chemical munitions storage facility in the U.S. Since the start of chemical operations at the plant began nearly eight years ago, the entire stockpile of more than 6,000 tons of GB (Sarin) nerve agent has been destroyed.
BP Safety Award
URS received a Safety Award from the Chief Financial Officer of BP for serving as project manager of the Whiting Refinery near Chicago. The Whiting facility has 85 remediation systems and is the largest inland refinery in the world with capacity of more than 400,000 barrels of crude daily. The award commemorated 14 years without a single OHSA recordable incident or days away from work (DAFW) accident.
Safety Achiever Award
The West Valley Nuclear Services Company in upstate New York presented its Safety Achiever Award to a URS Project Environmental Specialist for identifying and implementing specific safety practices for environmental field sampling during peak storm events. The award also recognized a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment at the West Valley environmental laboratory operated by URS.
Safety Milestone for Pennsylvania DEP
URS' Pittsburgh-based Remediation Operating Services group surpassed 25,000 man-hours without a recordable accident on an interim remedial response service contract (IRRSC) for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
The IRRSC contract requires a multitude of environmental investigations, engineering services and construction, demolition and environmental remediation activities at sites located throughout the state.
Gold Occupational Safety Award
The United Kingdom's Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) awarded a 2005 Gold Occupational Safety Award to URS. The award recognized the achievement of an exceptionally high standard of health and safety on projects in the UK over the past four years. Criteria for the award include a good safety management system and a low incidence of on-the-job injuries. URS has received RoSPA Gold Awards every year since 2001.
